I think that one of the things that helped me with controlling my drinking was the honest realization that it's not more fun to drink more. As a matter of fact, it is less fun. I did the "experiment" from Responsible Drinking ... one night at home I had a drink, wrote down how I was feeling about it; had another, wrote down how I was feeling about it; then had another and did the same thing. I think I stopped at three, but you could go on with it.
Anyway, I could see in just my writing (not even the content) that I was losing it, also it was true that the third was less satisfying than the first two were.
So, it was that, along with the self hatred and disgust that I experience with most hangovers that has helped me to curb the bingeing. I really don't want to go through those experiences again. In over a year of trying moderation, I have binged twice. That is a huge improvement for me. My last binge incident was about seven months ago. I've overdrank a few times (meaning four drinks - I don't have much tolerance, I've found), but not the horrible not wanting to stop business since that seven month ago incident. Of course, I can't say that it won't happen again, but I certainly hope that it will not.
